Orritor Nursery Unit

Orritor Nursery Unit, part of Orritor Primary School in Cookstown, provides early years education within a supportive primary school environment. Nestled in a semi-rural setting, the nursery is surrounded by open fields and residential areas, which offer a tranquil and engaging environment.

The proposed nursery unit, to replace the existing modular building, is designed as a modern, single-storey building that prioritizes natural light, safety, and flexibility for early years learning. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and strategically placed rooflights create bright, airy interiors, while direct access to secure outdoor play areas encourages free-flow interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The layout incorporates an open-plan activity zone arranged around a central core to enhance visibility for staff supervision. Sustainable materials, high thermal performance glazing, and energy-efficient heating systems have been specified to reduce the building’s environmental impact, while the warm, neutral colour palette and timber accents foster a calm, welcoming atmosphere.
